Outport communities were originally settled from the sea, and houses were oriented towards the water. Once roads were cut, the towns re-oriented themselves towards the land, and some houses were literally picked up and turned one hundred and eighty degrees on their foundations. The informal, everyday principal entries are still generally to the back or side of the house, but almost all homes have a ceremonial if inaccesible front door that faces the street - among the locals, these are jokingly refered to as “mother-in-law doors”.
